What is the Gospel

Good news for a broken world

This world is broken…our lives are broken…we know it…you know it…anyone who is paying attention can’t deny it. The gospel is God’s remedy to this broken world, to your broken life. Christianity is not a list of rules and regulations for you to rigidly follow. It’s the story of God by which He sets all that is crooked in this world straight, no matter how hard you’ve tried to destroy your life Jesus can restore you.

Gospel means “good news” and it’s God’s remedy to bring the change that our lives so desperately need. The Gospel finds its culmination in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as described by Paul in 1 Cor. 15:1-4. Jesus lived the life we could never live, and died the death we should have died. In other words not only does Jesus take our sins, our debts, and our punishment, but He also gives us His obedience, His spiritual wealth, and His perfect life (2 Cor. 8:9).

The gospel not only cleanses our sin from the past and secures our salvation for the future it transforms our lives in the present (Titus 2:11-14). As Tim Keller says, “the Gospel is not the abc’s of Christianity, it’s the a to z.” We don’t see the Gospel as merely the entry point to salvation, it’s the door we must enter daily to become a growing disciple of Jesus who needn’t find purpose, worth, approval, or security in anything but Jesus’ never ending love and acceptance. We understand this daily “preaching the gospel” to ourselves as the only means of growing as a disciple of Jesus.

In addition to this, the gospel is the good news regarding Jesus’ restoration of all things; that is His entire creation (Romans 8:18-25). The gospel is about the coming kingdom of Jesus (Matthew 3:2) where He will rule as our King in a kingdom that is free from sin and its repercussions.
